What Is Domain Registration?

Domain registration allows you to register your chosen name as a domain if it is available to be registered. To explain what a domain is in simple terms. A domain is what you type into your browser to access websites like or, and these are what is referred to as domains. Some domain registrations are more expensive than others, and some TLD’s are required to have a business registration number like an ABN to register a domain. For example, domain registration require an ABN (Australian business number) to be registered. It is worth noting that the ABN holder is the legal lessee of the domain and the contact information that is down as the domain owner does not prove ownership.

Domains typically required to be registered for a minimum term of one year and need to be renewed in order for ownership to be retained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to register a domain for 2 years?

The AuDa who is the authority of .au registrations has set requirements for the registration to be fixed for two years.

You can register a domain for a more extended period of time upon registration or renewing.

It is worth mentioning that it is a requirement to have a valid ABN.

What is domain privacy?

Domains regardless of the tld (.com or .nz etc) have records attached to the domain that are publicly available upon to perform to what is referred to as a ‘Whois lookup’.

This is what a unprotected domain would output on a WHOIS lookup.

Typically information like personal e-mail, address can be displayed that were entered at time of registration which could be unwanted.

Thankfully, there’s a way to mask this by essentially behind an organisational address that ‘administrates’ the domain. Therefore their information comes up.

If someone wanted to contact you, for example, to subpoena you to attend court because you ran an illegal site. That organisation once going through due diligence would pass on that information. So you can hide behind most organisations and prying eyes unless it’s a legal matter.

What are the WebJex's nameservers?

What is a domain backorder?

When a domain is registered that you really want to register like or these domains may one day become available for registration.

A backorder allows you to set a pending registration on a domain and on the day of the expiry the domain will be registered under your name if it has expired.

A backorder is typically made when an inactive domain is nearing the end of the registration and is a last minute grab.

Why would I buy a domain on backorder?

Domains often keep there search ranking as there could be many links backlinking to the expiring domain. By registering the domain you can pass the link authority to your main website. However, this is getting on the topic of search engine optimisation itself.

What if I don't have an ABN to register a .au domain?

You run the risk of having your domain seized and deactivated by the registrar or having the domain possibly lawfully seized from you. As it is a requirement for an ABN to be entered upon registration, the ABN holder becomes the legal lessee of the domain, therefore, can request management of the domain even if they don’t specifically have access to the account it was registered under.

Domain is registered to my business. Should I still get domain privacy?

Yes, there are plenty of spammers that use the registrar lookup to obtain business e-mail addresses. Typically people who have their e-mail listed under their domain will have more spam in their inbox.

Can I transfer my domain to WebJex?

Yes you can. Your domain registrar would have an authentication code which is usually accessible in your control panel. Otherwise, your registrar would be able to provide you with this key upon request.
