We are happy to announce that we are giving away a free Domain Privacy product for every new domain name you register. The Domain Privacy product comes absolutely FREE and is valid for 30 days.

This is a strategy to help our customers avoid those unwanted spam phone calls to your business as you are required to submit registration information such:

Your name

Your business or personal address

Contact number

E-mail address

This information is typically harvested for illegal and rather annoying marketing practices. If you own a business e-mail address and you have hardly given out your e-mail address and you’re getting spammed then it is a good sign that your contact information has been harvested.

Typically this information is used by web design firms in third world countries as an endless supply of possible new clients who get bombarded with e-mails from the moment they register a new domain.

Why get a domain privacy addon?

It masks your private information behind a corporate body that retains your real contact information for legitimate requests. For example if you are infringing on someone’s trademark they can request to have your contact information released so that they can file a lawsuit. Having domain privacy allows you to keep your information private which can help you avoid unwanted harassment which is really handy if you are registering your domain from your business address which happens to be your home.

WordPress is a powerful content management system (CMS) for website owners who are looking for a platform to build and scale their website as it goes through each critical stage of growth. WordPress is open source code, meaning you can download it and host it on your web hosting environment. However, WordPress offers official WordPress hosting through WordPress.com, which is considered a premium hosting solution for the WordPress platform. When you purchase a WordPress hosting plan through WordPress.com, they use a custom multi-site setup that allows them to provision WordPress sites for their users automatically and with minimal work required on your behalf.

There are some advantages when using WordPress.com hosting or even another platform that sells their hosting. But you need to be able to understand the specifications of your web hosting you are buying and what the pro’s and cons are of that particular host.

Advantages of using WordPress.com Official Hosting

No technical knowledge is needed to install WordPress.

Range of plugins in the library available for an easy install.

A huge range of themes available to be installed onto your WordPress site.

Premium hosting resources – Your website is managed by the team behind WordPress so your web hosting performance will be top-notched.

Reasonable cost for small businesses or FREE to get started with the WordPress free plan.

A secure network with security always in mind.

Disadvantages of using WordPress.com Official Hosting

Can work out to be much more expensive for web hosting in the long run

You will have issues installing the plugins and themes you may specifically want because they breach the security of the network for other users who are hosting their WordPress website with WordPress.com.

You don’t have root-level access to your WordPress installation.

You will have issues migrating your website and plugin data to a self-hosted WordPress installation in the future if your website needs change.

You are paying a premium for your hosting. Yes, the web hosting experience may be superior to many shared hosts. However, performance would not benefit you unless you’re a really big website.

Advantages of self-hosting WordPress

Full access over the WordPress code. You can modify it for your own purpose in any way you wish that doesn’t breach WordPress terms and conditions of use.

You can host WordPress with your web hosting provider of choice.

Install your own plugins and themes from third-party providers and from the repository. You won’t be restricted by WordPress in any shape or form.

Much lower running costs are available from shared web hosting providers.

Disadvantages of self-hosting WordPress

Unless protected by specialised settings and plugins, your website could be at risk from exploits.

WordPress will need to be updated along with all of your plugins and themes that you use on your site to ensure that your website remains secure.

WordPress websites on low end-hosts can be slow, especially if there are a lot of websites being hosted on that same physical provider on that server.

How to choose between WordPress official hosting and self-hosted

If you’re still stuck in choosing if you should go with WordPress as a hosted solution by WordPress or if you should follow these guide rules to help decide which approach in hosting your WordPress website is right for you.

The bottom line: If you have the ability to watch tutorials on YouTube, follow instructions, and use Google then you would be able to learn the basics to run WordPress on your own privately hosted environment. However, that being said, some people who are less tech-savvy will struggle to grasp the concepts of web hosting and installing WordPress that they will be much better off hiring someone else or using a hosted solution.

When you should use WordPress.com hosting

You are not confident with using any sort of web hosting control panel

You are getting started with WordPress but not sure if the platform is right for you

You aren’t on a strict budget for your website

You are happy to pay for peace of mind even if it comes at a cost

When you are running any company in the digital age, you will need a website designed and tailored to your needs that come with web hosting support as an extra. Most sites need some non-standard features such as e-commerce stores, accepting digital payments and credit cards. You may also be collecting information from your clients or generating leads through to your website that talks to other systems within your enterprise. Or you are tech-savvy enough to run your website, and you pay web hosting costs, but when something goes wrong, you’re stuck. Most web hosts won’t go above and beyond to fix your website problems if it’s user or code error and not a hosting related server issue. This can be very frustrating and cost you hours of trying to figure out why your WordPress site is no longer loading and is costing you even more time to find someone and explain what the issue is and get a quote on the fix. It can get messy, which is why we offer web hosting support as a standalone service we can offer.

Our aim is regardless of who you host with we will carry out website maintenance and depending on your unique needs we can offer to do additional SEO on your website to improve your search engine rankings overall. As your business grows, your website will need to be scaled and optimised for performance, which is a technical SEO ranking factor. You will also need to ensure your SSL certificates are valid and your website is secure. WebJex can take all the headaches away from you when it comes to optimising and managing your website for your business.

A SSL certificate helps your website be secure from prying eyes from seeing your personal data between your computer and the website you are visiting. In this post, we will discuss how in these six points.

SSL certificates work to keep your connection secure

SSL certificates encrypt your web traffic between you and the server. This is done through the SSL protocol https:// which uses port 443 on your device to establish that secure connection.

SSL certificates increase your user’s confidence with your brand

Another reason why you need an SSL certificate is trusted websites have the reputation of using SSL on their websites and it really does lift the trust between the site and the user. It could be said that visiting a website with SSL does create a kind of virtual handshake between a website and a user.

SSL certificates make your website faster

SSL because of its technical aspects make loading pages slightly faster because it splits the traffic between two protocols and is a more constant direct user to server connection than the normal HTTP:// requests over port 80. It is just that SSL is a more efficient technology than HTTP.

SSL certificates stop prying eyes

Keeping your connection from prying eyes is reduced greatly by using websites that use https:// enabled on their site. This prevents from typical spying and having what you do on these websites monitored by hackers.

SSL certificates are cheap

SSL Certificates are cheap and are sometimes free. There are benefits to paying extra for an SSL certificate.

Getting an SSL certificate

You can ask your web hosting provider for assistance with installing the certificate on your account. cPanel hosting usually offers an auto-SSL certificate which is issued by cPanel for your domains and subdomains for a few months and then is renewed. It may be beneficial to purchase a retail SSL certificate for your domain because not all SSL certificates are the same.

SSL certificates are needed for compliance

Many e-commerce providers who provide secure API’s and process payment information securely so you wouldn’t be able to run an e-commerce website without it. And if you are collecting any kind of user data like names, addresses, and phone numbers then you definitely need an SSL certificate. Users would be hesitant of handing any information over on a non-secure website. It’s the strongest reason why you need an SSL certificate.

In fact, if you don’t take precautions to protect users data you can be held liable for security breaches and you could be fined a huge sum of money depending on the size of the breach. Having a paid SSL certificate that is issued by a premium provider they offer insurance if the SSL is ever breached. For example if the SSL connection is decrypted by any means (which is an unlikely scenario) they will pay out a lump sum to cover liability costs such as fines and legal fees.

This might be a reason to choose a premium SSL provider rather than a free provider such as Let’sEncrypt or cPanel SSL certificates. From personal experience from using premium SSL certificates and free certificate providers there are pros and cons but if you’re just running a simple blog and not collecting data or processing private information you could justify just using a free SSL certificate.

If you are running a e-commerce website than a strong reason to get a premium SSL certificate is that your site will become targetted by hackers and known exploits. Hackers would go above and beyond to hack into your website if you become a big enough business to virtually rob of personal information. Most businesses that have serious sized security breaches lost their reputation and trust. Usually, it becomes such a big PR issue for the business that it never goes away.

Recently, there has been a lot of outrage towards cPanel regarding the changes announced in July to the cPanel pricing increase from the web hosting community. In this article, I’m going to cover what this means for WebJex, other web-hosting providers, and what it lastly means for the industry as a whole.

cPanel Price Increase Bottom Line Impact

In preparation of writing this article, I read comments from the cPanel FaceBook reviews, Reddit and on the web hosting discord server linked off Reddit that consists of small and big web hosting provider staff and business owners. Majority of cPanel users have strongly indicated that the price will negatively affect their business by hurting their bottom line in increased server licensing costs.

Before the pricing structure changes, you purchased a VPS license for around USD 15.00. Enabling you to host an unlimited amount of cPanel accounts on one VPS. Thus this which meant for web-host providers who could charge much lower costs per account.

The result encouraged cPanel users to have scenarios such as one site per cPanel account rather than using ‘addon domains’ feature within the user account to add additional sites.

Now, cPanel price increase has an entry-level price of around USD 15.00 for one cPanel account and pricing after 100 cPanel accounts have an added cost per every account added. Meaning for the bigger hosts that have thousands of cPanel accounts on one server has reported having more than 400% increases in their cPanel licensing.

Web hosts generally won’t reveal customer numbers and servers that they own so the actual statistics is complete speculation. But this is clear that this cPanel price increase hurts more significant web host providers than smaller hosts.

cPanel price increase has already got top providers migrating away from cPanel.

SiteGround has posted saying that they are migrating to their control panel solution. Although SiteGround has announced that they have been working on this change for three years, it could be speculated that development of this change has been escalated recently.

No one would blame SiteGround for wanting to migrate as they are considered a respectable web hosting provider, and we at WebJex support SiteGround’s mission to be able to provide secure web hosting to website owners.

Other hosts have publicly posted company blog posts stating their disapproval of the price increased, and some have informed their customers that they will be facing price increases and that they regret being put in the situation where they have to consider charging not-for-profit organisations for web hosting services.

VentraIP has discontinued its free hosting plans and encouraged its users to contact the company to find a solution to minimise the impact.

Ramifications of the cPanel price hike

cPanel migration done incorrectly could lead to security issues

Although there are tools out there to help migrate cPanel accounts from a cPanel server to a non-cPanel server by using 3rd party scripts, these scripts may break websites as different control panels restrict different settings, work differently and cPanel to its credit is a very reliable and redundant system and may fix problems automatically routinely that other software doesn’t have the same abilities.

For example, consider the following scenario. An extensive website has a poorly coded script that uses a lot of resources to process, but the site owner isn’t aware that this script is a resource hogger because of the way cPanel processes and prioritises the runtime of said script. cPanel could have a level of optimisation on the host level that allows the script to run because it is identified as being a safe script. This same script running on a non-cPanel server could be stopped from running and therefore not being able to complete correctly. This may have unintended consequences.

cPanel also updates their own software and add new features which need to be considered in future migration scripts, so it is more likely than unlikely that there will be problems for site owners who are forced to migrate their services over to a new control panel. Just like there is in any software open source or closed source, there are always bugs being found in software and even the most popular migration tools.

cPanel could lose thousands of customers

As there are reports of hosts migrating away from cPanel, this would no doubt have a ripple effect on the company’s operations, and instead of increasing their profits it may have the opposite effect and force the company to make cutbacks in the long term. Although this is simply speculation at this point, the possibility needs to be considered if cPanel will be a future-proof web hosting control panel for the following decades.

However, the cPanel pricing increase price may push the bigger hosts out, but newer hosts may thrive as they are least impacted by these changes and may only have <$100 added monthly expense to their actual costs. This means that the expected revenue from this price increase may not increase company profits by the huge margins as expected, but cPanel will profit from smaller hosts that continue to use cPanel and grow their business on the new pricing structure.

cPanel will become a premium hosting solution rather than the industry standard

cPanel has been the most reliable and most sought control panel by users looking for a control panel to help manage their site. It’s also considered easy to use by most standards compared to other control panes, and small businesses may struggle to adapt to different terminology within control panels if they were dropped into a separate control panel overnight. This delay may cause customers to switch to more expensive solutions like website builder providers out of frustration of the ‘mess around’ they have endured by their host and will lose confidence in selecting a cPanel host out of fear they may cease to use cPanel in the future.

cPanel hosting, as a result, would be considered a premium choice over other less reputable control panel software. This premium choice comes at a premium price to users who wish to stay with cPanel.

WebJex will remain to provide Australian cPanel Hosting

cPanel will be an option for shared hosting, and we will invest in an alternative control panel to be able to offer more choices to our customers who don’t specifically want to use cPanel as a way to reduce our customer’s account costs.

cPanel hosting costs will be revised in the next week, but the increase will be minimal as we consider ourselves a smaller host and we are not impacted like bigger hosts.

However, we stand with our competitors, industry partners in sharing our mutual disappointment with the cPanel pricing increase, and we hope that cPanel makes some changes to reduce the cost impact on users. We have reached out to cPanel with constructive feedback, and they have acknowledged that our feedback will be collected.

We still love and trust cPanel, but we are bitter towards the company.

We still love cPanel, and this blog post was written to highlight the challenges created by this change but our trust towards cPanel as a company has taken a toll. WebJex found out about the price increase through reading an influx of negative reviews about cPanel on the official facebook page. Since then the reviews section has been removed off the page due to complaints of the cPanel pricing increase.

What is reseller hosting, and who is it for?

Maybe you are a web designer or developer or another type of web professionals, and you’ve already got some clients under your business. Maybe you’re a tech graduate instead, and you’re looking to get into an industry with huge potential?

Whether you’re starting up a new web hosting business or your hosting as an extra added service as part of your offering, then you may benefit in using reseller hosting for simplicity sake and also to potentially earn extra income without the hard work involved in setting up your own web servers.

So exactly what is reseller hosting well in a nutshell?

If you’ve got customers that need hosting services, you can purchase a bulk amount of Hosting space and then reset it onto them but a healthy profit. It’s a great way to add an additional recurring revenue stream to your business, but what’s really great is that you have zero upfront cost to invest in expensive infrastructures like servers or software licenses. You get access to a special cPanel admin area called WHM which stands for web host manager, and from here you have complete control over your customer’s accounts.

What can a reseller account do?

You can do things such as create plans, create customer accounts. You can give users particular admin rights. So you have all of the control that you would have with an actual server. But at a fraction of the cost, each of your customers gets their own unique cPanel control panel login, there’s no mention of us visually on the control panel so that way your customers think that it’s your server your is a completely white label which gives you the confidence to offer cPanel to your clients without having to juggle several websites on a single user account and never being able to trust your clients with the password in fear of exposing sensitive information about your other clients to your client.

The key difference between shared hosting and reseller hosting it’s your customers and your customers get their own unique cpanel login. This means that they can self manage look after themselves completely end to end this means that they’re not contacting every five minutes to set up a new email account or reset a password or whatever.

One of the really neat features is that you can create plans like bronze silver and gold that way you can offer plans for clients who are prepared to pay more, so that way you have something for everyone one thing you do need to be aware of is that you need to provide first-line support for your customers. We are, of course, we are there in the background to help, and we can fix all of the issues that do arise if you do need any help, but in the first instance, your customers will contact you for initial support.

However, if things you can even start to automate your hosting business, you can use an automated billing platform like WHMCS which automates the billing and the administration and provisioning of your hosting accounts under your reseller account. So there you have it. That’s a quick overview of reseller hosting.

A SSL Certificate is a small computer file which digitally combines a cryptographic key with an organization’s information. On a web server, for example, it allows secure connections to an online browser. Depending upon the kind of SSL Certificate being used by the organization, different levels of checks will be made by the Certificate Authority (CA) issuing the certification. The CA itself holds a Root Certification.

An SSL Certificate given to an organization is based from the Root Certification. The same Root Certification should be present on the end consumer ’s pc in order for the issued SSL Certificate to be trusted. The browser and OS vendors work with Certificate Authorities, or so the Root Certification is embedded within their applications.

Complete User and Organizational Factors of View
For end users, SSL could hardly be simpler. Safe web addresses start with “https://” rather than just “http://”.

Users see a padlock symbol inside their own browser. And that’s about it.

In comparison, for organizations conducting email servers, e-commerce sites or hosting system administration resources, it’s a little more involved.

To authenticate themselves to customers and customers, and prove to customers they’re working with the right thing, organizations need to acquire an SSL Certificate.

The Goal: To Establish Trusted Interactions Online
In case the local Root Certification, as well as the remote-issued SSL Certificate, aren’t correctly matched, the browser displays messages to the consumer concerning untrusted mistakes. When they’re matched, the user can move with confidence.

The 2 parties (the local consumer ’s browser and the remote webserver) first swap a symmetric encryption key. “Symmetric” means the same key is used to encrypt data that’s transmitted and decrypt it on arrival at the other end. The “forward secrecy” assembled to the system ensures the short term symmetric key cannot be deduced from the long-term asymmetric crucial, for further protection against hacking.

Types of SSL Certificates

Three types of SSL Certificates exist.

1. Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates

These are issued only following the Certificate Authority has verified the exclusive right of the business to use the domain name concerned and also a number of additional aspects:

The legal, physical, and operational Presence of the business
Consistency between the organization’s identity and official documents
Good authorization by the organization of the issuance of the EV SSL Certification

2. Organization Validation (OV) SSL Certificates

These include checking the right of the business to use the domain name, and a few, but not all, of the rest of the verification done in case of the EV SSL Certification above. End-users may see additional info on the organization.

3. Domain Validation (DV) SSL Certificates

Lastly, these restrict verification to checking the right of the business to use the domain name concerned. Consequently, end-users will just see info concerning the encryption, maybe not about the organization.

Second of all, there’s the shared hosting option. This option is regarded as the most used option for many webmasters out there because it’s extremely affordable. In this kind of situation, you’ll share the server with numerous another website. Many small to medium company owners uses shared hosting as they don’t require the resources of the entire server that is too much. Without having to pay for the entire server, they can still get features which are made ready to use by providers with large bandwidth and disk storage amount. Depending upon the kind of package that you choose, you may also get multiple e-mail addresses, PHP, MySQL and support.

Nevertheless, the problem with shared hosting will be its vulnerability to security risk because you’re sharing the server with numerous websites and you do not usually know who they’re and what they’re up to. If one website is attacked by virus, all the websites in that server would be affected as well. Then there’s the unmanaged hosting. Users of this kind of hosting will become the administrator of their very own server in a dedicated hosting service condition. This could be the choice for all those that need more bandwidth, storage and features that free and shared hosting don’t have.

With a dedicated hosting, users may have as many databases and e-mail address as they like. It generally comes along with 500GB to 1000 GB of bandwidth capacity per month plus a generous amount of disk space. Nevertheless, the problem lies on whether you know how to run your very own server or not. If you don’t know how, you’ll have to hire someone else to do the administrative task for you.

Australian Dedicated servers are really able to offer you the most reliable and secure web hosting services around, but in order for a dedicated server to be effective in any case you need to manage it properly
and this is where you have to choose between a managed dedicated server and an unmanaged dedicated server. Managed dedicated server hosting services are the go-to recommended
option for people who have never run or managed a VPS server instance or have managed a dedicated server before, or may not generally have the time to dedicated to managing their dedicated server properly; being able to make use of full support from a support team will also allow them to make the most of their dedicated server. If you have managed a VPS server or dedicated server before that uses the same operating system as your dedicated server then you may find managing your dedicated server a doddle, meaning that an unmanaged dedicated server would be the best option for you to go by.

How cost effective is Managed vs Unmanaged Dedicated Server Hosting?

Managed dedicated server can also be very cost effective in all situations. As this may mean a larger overhead than unmanaged servers it means you can get optional additional support. For example, you can have them secure your dedicated server to a high level – if you have them do it then you can be sure that it has been done to a high standard. Managed dedicated server hosting can be highly effective as it means that you won’t have to worry about the management aspect of your dedicated server, when in most cases you have more important things to be worrying about and getting on with that aren’t related to your dedicated server; in most cases the support team employed by your web hosting provider are also on
call to answer your queries 24×7, meaning that even if there is a problem it will be dealt with swiftly. Managed dedicated server hosting may not always have a higher uptime rate than an unmanaged dedicated server of a similar specification, but a benefit of managed dedicated server hosting services is they can help when it comes to technical problems with your server and are quick to pinpoint issues with your server; you can have your web hosting provider’s support team optimize your dedicated server for you to make it as reliable as possible which may be subject to an additional charge.

How reliable is Managed vs Unmanaged Dedicated Server Hosting?

Unmanaged dedicated server hosting is only beneficial if you know that you have the skills to manage your dedicated server properly and are able to apply those skills to ensure that your dedicated server is both reliable and secure. Unmanaged dedicated server hosting can be very cost effective in situations where you may want to really customize your entire hosting environment; you may, for example, wish to have a specific Linux distribution installed on your dedicated server, and in such a situation you may find that managed dedicated server hosting services aren’t suitable for your requirements because your web hosting provider may not be willing to support the distribution concerned.

Lastly, managed dedicated server hosting services and unmanaged dedicated server hosting services are effective in the right situations, it’s just up to you as the consumer to make sure that you choose the right dedicated server hosting service for your requirements.

When selecting and ordering a dedicated server you should always read the terms and conditions twice, even if you are going to get an unmanaged dedicated server or managed a dedicated server.
