If you are a new business coming up with an idea for your next web design layout for your website or coming up with a new logo and don’t know where to begin this article will give you some guidance in coming up with a suitable colour scheme for your website or brand.

How to create a colour scheme for your website if you already have a logo

Canva has a fantastic tool that allows you to upload any picture such as a logo and have the site extract the colour scheme from the logo and output the colours in hex and RGB code. This allows you to easily find out what colours are associated with your logo that would compliment your website layout.

Depending on what kind of logo you have and what colours you use in your logo will determine the range of colours you will have available. It is important to note if you choose colours that don’t contrast well in your logo this will also reflect on your website so it is important if you are taking this approach that your logo design is finalised.

TIP: Save the colour codes of your scheme in a document somewhere as quite often when building content for your brand you will want those colour codes handy,

Designing a logo from scratch

Canva is a freemium service that allows users to create graphics used for social media websites, websites, blogs, e-mail marketing and graphics for print purposes. It really is a great tool and the fact it is free allows you to get started for free.

Canva Pricing Australia $13.99 per month.

There are a few types points of Canva premium that are worth mentioning:

The premium upgrade which is as of Feb 2020 is $13.99 AUD per month if you pay annually upfront. The premium gives you access to plenty of images and vectors with the abilities to resize your current canvas. One feature that annoys most if the inability to make PNG graphics transparent. The lack of transparency feature in the free option makes logo creation difficult if your logo is anything but perfectly squared.

Canva comes with a 30-day trial which you are required to enter payment information prior. However, you can cancel anytime before and not get billed.

Get access to additional graphics and photos without upgrading to premium.

You can upgrade your account and get access to plenty of photos and graphics for a small fee. Interestingly enough this upgrade option is more of an option for mobile app users using Canva. This upgrade does not include any of the pro features.

If you can’t justify upgrading to Canva pro you would find plenty of uses for the stock images that Canva has. And if you are savvy enough you can grab images from the library directly without having to download a Canva template just to get the image.

Is Canva premium worth it?

For the price and the features of Canva premium, it is worth upgrading especially if you can pay for a year upfront. Canva allows you to work on your website graphics and design amazing content while you are on the road on your mobile phone or on your desktop.

And considering applications like Photoshop and Illustrator can cost hundreds of dollars each year in licensing fees it’s not a bad alternative app if you are just getting started with graphic design or marketing.

WordPress Adelaide had a meetup this Tuesday at The Duke of Brunswick Hotel which was a change of venue from last year. Alex hosted the usual 101 talk which for those who haven’t attended WordPress Adelaide Meetups before, covers the basic features of WordPress and goes into basic good practice terms.

The meetup attendance was full requiring extra chairs to be sought and had a great mixture of developers, WordPress users and beginners who are just starting out on their WordPress journey.

The main topic of the night was the ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) plugin by Elliot Condon which as of the time of posting has over 1 million installations and is supported across 12 languages. And the most exciting part of the presentation was having Elliot himself visit from intestate to talk to the WordPress Adelaide Meetup group.

Alex and Elliot both held their own presentations showing the basic functions of using both the free and premium versions of ACF. They also bravely wrote PHP to demonstrate how easy it is to implement ACF into your existing theme and Alex also covered the ACF shortcode integrations with a demo.

First of all, we aren’t posting this to do ourselves out of business but to ultimately help anyone who may be a new business owner considering SEO. You may be in the process of making a website or you have recently created one and you don’t know to invest in SEO or not. Why should a new business invest in SEO? Well, firstly we recommend the business to only invest in SEO if they are past the ‘trial’ stage of the business. SEO is a commitment regardless if you are doing the SEO yourself or hiring an agency to do it.

SEO is important for the long term but may not need to be a priority.

SEO campaigns can cost anything from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on the competition in your industry. You also need to weigh up your competitive advantage with your existing methods of getting customers.

If you have started a business and you are able to have a decent number of contacts who may be interested in your service we would highly recommend you stick at your business for a few months. The reason why we recommend not investing in SEO during the first few months is the fact your business idea may ‘realistically’ won’t survive after a year regardless of your search engine ranking.

Understanding people burn out, give up on their ideas and factors outside of their control may just mean they can’t continue. So it makes sense not to invest in SEO too early, it’s like buying a house and going through the process of deciding if this is the right step for you financially.

If you have been operating for a few months and you have generated sustainable income and you are looking for ways to generate more leads it’s time to consider SEO.

Start first with local SEO

As we would discuss and inform you when you sign up to our SEO packages it’s best to start with specific keywords that match the area your service is servicing or present in. A clear example would be a local Adelaide plumber located in Brighton who has a service range of 10km. You wouldn’t want to be ranked #1 under the keyword ‘Plumbers Adelaide’ if you only service a small part of Adelaide metro.

You might be thinking “Hey, I would want to rank #1 regardless” especially since it’s a key term that most people would use. However, part of ranking on Google is relevance and how many people exit your site after visiting. In fact, this is just 2 of the dozens of metrics that search engines use to gauge your website.

Good content and relevant content is key

Using the previous example of our plumber wanting to rank on Google. They are more likely to rank higher if they are optimising their keywords under ‘Plumbers Brighton’ and similarly for nearby suburbs. As Google will learn where to show your listing to and which locale. You can also give Google this information by registering your business on Google.
